Rich in History
Nestled beneath the towering Langdale Pikes, the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel began life as a 17th-century farmhouse. In the mid 1800s, the Wordsworthian beauty of the valley drew increasing numbers of travellers, and in 1862, the farmhouse was lovingly converted into an inn by the Harrison family. Its fame grew with the popularity of fell walking, especially under the charm of Alfred Wainwright’s guidebooks. The adjoining Walker’s Bar, once a barn, became a beloved haunt for weary climbers and literary souls. In more recent years, the property was acquired by the RedCat Pub Company in 2021, who have carefully preserved its spirit. Today, with 22 restful rooms, hearty food, and views that take the breath away, it remains a Lakeland treasure, romantic, storied, and quietly magnificent.
