The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel in Langdale is a family run and owned hotel in Lake District, Cumbria. We arrived here in 1991, moved in on the 8th August and finally opened the doors on Boxing day. After a lot of hard work, many skips and a burning bonfire for many days, we ended with a half workable hotel.

Since those very early days a huge amount of renovation work has been carried out and is still continuing to this day, making it one of the premier hotels in Lake District Cumbria offering short breaks in Lake District, bed and breakfast and accommodation near Ambleside.

New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel

The original homestead was a farmhouse and in 1832 changed to a hotel, which took just over 30 years to build and was finished in 1862. The spruce tree in the garden was planted on completion and is now protected.

In the 1950s and 1960s the hotel was a local shop and petrol station (the tanks are still situated underneath the beer garden).

The 1980s saw the hotel change usage to an outward bound centre for under privileged children before being bought in 1991 by Mr John Smith, who oversaw the refurbishment and workings of the hotel. Sadly John passed away in August 2010 but the hotel is still being run by his family who moved with him to the hotel in 1991.

Lake District Produce

All our meat and fish products are locally sourced from our local suppliers throughout the Lake District, Cumbria and fruit and vegetables are hand collected every week from the local market in the Lake District. In the summer months some fruit, vegetables and herbs are home grown here at the hotel in Langdale.

All the dishes on our menu are home cooked at the hotel, including the breads, sorbets and ice creams.

Our wine menu is selected with great care from 'Frank Stainton' wine merchants who are based in Kendal.
